(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 29, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- According to a new study, security warnings displayed by Web browsers are more effective at deterring risky behavior than previously believed. The study looked at how users reacted to warnings that popped up on Firefox and Chrome browsers warning of phishing attempts, malware attacks and invalid secure sockets layer certificates.
Experts used to believe that most users ignored those warnings based on several studies between 2002 and 2009, but in the past four years, those warnings have been redesigned and rewritten to be better understood and effective at getting users attention to help influence peoples behavior.
During the study, more than 25 million warning impressions displayed by the browsers were analyzed. The data was collected and found that less than 25 percent of users opted to bypass the warnings and continue onto the sites they were heading. According to the paper, this demonstrates that the security warnings are an effective practice at helping keep users and their computers safe.
However, the researchers did note that users clicked through 70 percent of Chromes SSL warnings, almost twice that of Firefox. While Chromes SSL warning only requires one click and Firefox requires three, the study authors noted that Chromes SSL click-through rate was undesirable even despite the positive findings, demonstrating a potential for improvement.
