(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 22, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- In Taiwan, thousands across the island have been notified as the entire country is now considered a an “alert zone” due to a Typhoon Soulik movement through the country. The storm has already killed one and injured seven.

A police officer died after he was hit with a brick that came loose during the storm in the Central Emergency Operation Center. Seven others were injured in Taipei. The majority of the injuries were sustained due to falling objects that were struck the individuals.

Over 8,000 individuals were removed from their homes, while the southern portion of the country was notified of the possibility of landslides due to the rain, according to officials.

“The whole country is now considered an alert zone,” an official from the National Fire Agency told AFP, as soldiers were deployed in high risk areas

Over 5,000 in total have been evacuated from the landslide zones in the south. Nearly 3,000 were moved to Kaosiung city, while another 2,000 were residence of the Pingtung area. Each group has been taken to local government building, which often possess stronger foundations and construction.

Offices and schools have, unsurprisingly, been closed throughout the Taipei area and in other major cities. Residents are now being advised to stay indoors during the typhoon, unless notified to relocate for safety.

The storm is producing winds over 100 miles-per-hour as it makes its landfall over the north-east coast and works its way through the country.

The local media reported the officer who died was riding his motorcycle home from work when he was struck. He was pronounced dead on the spot. There is no word how he was able to remain stationary on a bike amongst winds that could pick up a brick and launch it across a street.
